Comprehensive dermatology training isn’t just for dermatologists, says pediatric dermatologist Sarah Stein, MD. She and Adena Rosenblatt, MD, PhD, are focused on providing in-depth dermatology education to pediatric residents.
“Skin, hair and nail problems present to pediatricians of all specialties, but many have not had the dermatology exposure necessary to comfortably diagnose and manage these issues,” Stein says. “Dr. Rosenblatt and I have worked to create an extensive lecture series to introduce as many topics as possible to the pediatrics residency as a whole. Additionally, residents can participate in elective rotations to acquire firsthand exposure to the breadth of conditions presenting to the pediatric dermatologist.”
The pediatric dermatology group has contributed to the Comer Clinical Guidelines initiative to standardize the initial management of hospitalized patients with such skin conditions as atopic dermatitis and Stevens-Johnson syndrome. Currently patients are being enrolled in an industry-sponsored, multicenter, double-blind randomized controlled trial of a new systemic medication for the treatment of psoriasis in the pediatric population.
