Public Transportation

The information number for both the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) and the Metra is 836-7000. This number can be dialed direct from any area code in the Chicago metropolitan area. Personnel can direct you to the trains and buses that serve the University of Chicago Medical Center and the Duchossois Center for Advanced Medicine.

By Bus

The #4 Cottage Grove services the University of Chicago Medical Center, stopping on Cottage Grove Avenue at 58th and 59th streets. The #55 Garfield stops at 55th Street and Ellis Avenue.

The CTA provides a number of express buses to and from Hyde Park. Visit the University of Chicago Transportation Services site for exact schedule and route information.

Important notice: Due to construction, the following bus reroutes will be in effect until May 10, 2008:

  • #170 (westbound only) will travel west on 59th St. and turn left onto to Ellis Ave; travel south on Ellis Ave. and turn right unto to the Midway Plaisance; travel west on Midway Plaisance to the temporary bus stop located where the Midway Plaisance and Drexel Ave. intersect; continue west on the Midway Plaisance and turn left onto Cottage Grove onto its regular route (AM/PM).
  • #192 (westbound only) will travel west on Cornell Drive to Stony Island Ave, and cross Stony Island Ave. onto the Midway Plaisance; continue west on the Midway Plaisance to a temporary bus stop located where the Midway Plaisance and Drexel Ave. intersect; continue west on the Midway Plaisance over its regular route (AM/PM).

By Elevated Train ("The El")

The CTA's Elevated Green Line reaches its southern terminal at 63rd Street and Cottage Grove Avenue. After exiting the station, walk north along Cottage Grove Avenue four blocks to 59th Street.

By Commuter Rail

Metra Electric Line

The Metra Electric line has two stops near the University of Chicago Medical Center, one at 57th Street at Lake Park Avenue, and one at 59th Street at Harper Street. The CTA #170/University of Chicago Midway bus provides service to and from these stations and the Medical Center (860 E. 59th Street entrance) during weekday rush hour periods, from approximately 6:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m., and again from approximately 3:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Visit the CTA Web site for exact schedule and route information.

South Shore Line/Indiana Commuter Rail

The South Shore line train provides service to the 57th Street station. Union and Northwestern Train Stations Shuttle Bus Service

During weekdays, the Medical Center provides a morning shuttle bus service from the downtown Union and Northwestern train stations to the Medical Center's campus. In the late afternoons and early evenings, we provide return service from our 860 E. 59th Street entrance to Union and Northwestern train stations.
