Sensorineural Hearing Loss

Our cochlear implant program brings sound to children with severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss.

Sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) is permanent loss of hearing of various degrees. Early identification of hearing impairment is the key to a child's communicative success. If hearing loss is not identified and addressed early, it may result in significant delays in speech and cognitive development.

The University of Chicago Comer Children's Hospital provides a comprehensive range of services to identify and rehabilitate children with congenital hearing loss. We offer our patients the following:

• Testing with advanced equipment and techniques
• Newborn screens
• Traditional hearing aids
• Bone-anchored hearing aids
• Cochlear implantation
• Genetic testing and counseling

Children requiring sedation for testing are observed by specially trained nurses in a specialized pediatric procedure area.
