With seven board-certified pediatric endocrinologists on staff, we have one of the largest pediatric endocrinology sections in the country.

Advancing Research

The University of Chicago Comer Children’s Hospital has received more grant funding from the National Institutes of Health to study hormonal disorders in children and teens than any other program in the Midwest. Our Diabetes Research and Training Center is one of only six centers funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the country.

In addition, the Chicago Center for Reproductive Research at the University of Chicago is one of only eight programs in the country to receive NIH funding. Research at the center helps benefit teens with menstrual irregularities and other related hormonal problems.

Such research funding helps doctors unravel some of the mysteries of hormonal diseases in children. Our patients benefit from this new knowledge--when and where it happens.

Currently, physicians at the Chicago Comer Children’s Hospital are studying:

  • The cause of hormonal deficiencies and disorders at the molecular level, which may help doctors develop new ways to treat and prevent the diseases
  • Differences in teenagers with type 1 and type 2 diabetes--particularly the factors that affect future risk of cardiovascular disease
  • Causes of childhood diabetes in Chicago by tracking the incidence of diabetes through the Chicago Childhood Diabetes Registry
