Developmental Play Groups
Child life specialists provide daily developmental playgroups for inpatients of all ages. This includes an infant/toddler group, a preschool/school-age group, and a teen group. These groups promote appropriate developmental skills, socialization, and self-expression in a safe, comfortable environment.
Infant/Toddler Group
Infant/toddler group is provided for children ages birth to 2 years old in a safe and inviting play space within the Child Life Playroom. At this age, children often familiarize themselves with their environment by exploring and manipulating objects introduced during play. We provide a supervised time in which all areas of development--including social, language, cognitive, and the physical--are encouraged to grow and develop during individual and group play. Toys and activities are used to encourage the expression of emotions, a sense of control, and success while in the healthcare setting. Most importantly, we welcome families to come join this group and engage with their children in the important work of play.
Preschool/School-Age Group
Afternoon playgroup offers preschool and school age children an opportunity to maintain and build on their developmental skills while in the hospital. We provide many opportunities for self-expression, and mastery and control through play. Children are encouraged to develop their imagination by playing "dress-up" or participating in other activities in the make-believe kitchen, through medical play, or in the doll area. Playgroups are also a time for children to meet and interact with one another.
Teen Group
Teen group is held daily, during either the afternoon or evening hours for patients 11 to 18 years old. Teens are provided with the opportunity to play video games, board games, email friends on the computer, socialize with others, and--on teen nights--cook meals together. Structured activities during these groups allow teens to talk about issues related to hospitalization, such as body image, self-esteem, and other concerns.
