Supporting Your Child During Procedures

Infants: Birth to 18 months

What to Bring

  • Pacifier 
  • Blanket

Support During the Procedure

  • Stay close to your child
  • Touch your child (Rub hair, pat chest, etc.)
  • Sing a familiar song
  • Speak softly

Toddlers: 18 months to 2 years

What to Bring

  • Pacifier 
  • Blanket 
  • Stuffed toy/doll

Support During the Procedure

  • Stay close to your child, and hold his/her hand
  • Use praise ("You're holding still. Great job!")
  • Helpful distractions: books, videos, bubbles

Preschool: 3 to 5 years

What to Bring

  • Pacifier
  • Blanket
  • Stuffed toy/doll
  • Favorite toy
  • Favorite book

Support During the Procedure

  • Stay close to your child, and hold his/her hand
  • Use praise ("You're holding still. Great job!")
  • Helpful distractions: look-and-find book, video, bubbles, pinwheel, hugging favorite item
  • Sing songs, and talk about something your child enjoys

School Age: 6 to 10 years

What to Bring

  • Favorite toy/doll 
  • Hand-held video (game or movie)

Support During the Procedure

  • Stay close to your child, and hold his/her hand
  • Use praise ("You're holding still. Great job!")
  • Helpful distractions: I Spy book, video, bubbles, pinwheel, hugging/holding favorite item

Teen: 11 and up

What to Bring

  • Hand-held video (game or movie) 
  • iPod

Support During the Procedure

  • Ask your teen what might help him/her, such as holding hands or talking/not talking
  • Helpful distractions: video game, movie, iPod

General Preparation Guideline Based on Age

Please note: Every child is different. You know your child best.

  • Children 2 Years Old: Prepare him/her on the way to the appointment
  • Children 3-5 Years Old: Prepare him/her the day before the appointment
  • Children 6-10 Years Old: Prepare him/her a few days before your appointment
  • Children 11 and Older: Prepare him/her a week or two in advance
