Stem Cell Transplant

The University of Chicago Comer Children's Hospital was the first hospital in the Chicago area to offer a pediatric stem cell transplant program.

Our expert pediatric hematologists/oncologists provide stem cell transplants to children of all ages--from infancy through late teens. We offer cord blood, allogeneic, and autologous stem cell transplants--for children with:

  • Cancers, including leukemia and solid tumors
  • Aplastic anemia hemoglobinopathies
  • Sickle cell disease
  • Genetic disorders, such as immunodeficiency syndromes, osteopetrosis, and metabolic storage disorders

A stem cell transplant can be a difficult treatment for children--and their families--to go through. The aggressive chemotherapy involved can leave children vulnerable to infections and other problems. But the advanced, compassionate care available at the Chicago Comer Children's Hospital helps ensure successful transplants for our young patients.

Each child is followed by a dedicated team of clinicians--including a primary transplant physician, a nurse coordinator, infectious disease physicians, and others--who keep constant tabs on the child's well being. Our state-of-the-art inpatient unit is completely HEPA filtered, screening out any infections that could harm a child who is recovering from chemotherapy and transplant. Yet, the unit is child- and family-friendly, providing guest beds as well as activities for patients to enjoy as they recover.
