Fellowship in Pediatric Hematology/Oncology

Program Overview

The Section of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology and Stem Cell Transplantation in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Chicago offers a three-year Fellowship Program, accredited by the ACGME.

Goals and Objectives

The Fellowship Program trains pediatricians in the clinical discipline of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology and prepares them for a potential career in academic medicine and as independent investigators.

Throughout the fellowship years, all fellows participate in an extensive group of educational programs.

The first year of the Fellowship Program is predominantly clinical with six to seven months of service on the inpatient Pediatric Oncology Service, Transplantation Service, and Outpatient Oncology Clinics, as well as additional required and elective rotations.

During the second and third years, the majority of the fellow’s effort is devoted to training in laboratory, translational, and/or clinical research. The fellow’s time is protected to allow concentration on investigation. Fellows continue to follow their patients in continuity clinics throughout all years of fellowship.

An optional fourth year may be available for fellows who want to continue advanced research training.

Fellows receive a month of vacation each year. Travel to present at national meetings is supported.

Successful completion of the fellowship program prepares fellows for the pediatric hematology/oncology subspecialty board examination.
