Uma Subramanian Srinivasan, MDAssistant Professor of PediatricsDirector, Pediatric Sickle Cell ProgramA respected authority on sickle cell disease, Dr. Uma Srinivasan is an expert in the care and treatment of patients with all types of blood disorders. She is especially interested in the diagnosis and treatment of sickling hemoglobinopathies. Dr. Srinivasan believes that the successful treatment of children with sickling hemoglobinopathies requires a combination of thorough testing, accurate diagnosis, and the most current medical treatment available. However, medical treatment alone is not enough. Dr. Srinivasan also believes that family education and support must be high-quality and ongoing if treatment of these children is to be truly successful. Dr. Srinivasan regularly participates in outreach activities designed to increase awareness and understanding of sickling hemoglobinopathies among healthcare providers and lay people. She regularly travels to community hospitals in the Chicago metropolitan area to present lectures on sickling hemoglobinopathies to pediatricians and their staffs. She focuses on presenting these lectures at community hospitals that serve a high percentage of African-American children. For her efforts to improve the lives of children with sickle cell, Dr. Srinivasan was awarded a "Touch of Hope Award" from the Sickle Cell Anemia Foundation.
