Visitor Identification, Code Number Program & Obtaining Patient Information

At the University of Chicago Medicine Comer Children's Hospital, we recognize the importance of providing for your child’s safety, privacy, and confidentiality.  Therefore, we have implemented a visitor identification and code number program:

Visitor Identification

  • Upon admission, parents are given two yellow bands.  Parents are considered part of the health care team and are welcome to stay with their child at any time.  If there is only one parent, that parent may identify a supportive person to receive the second yellow band. Yellow-banded parents MUST show photo identification and the yellow band to the Comer Children’s public safety officer before going to their child’s care unit.
  • Parents complete a visitor list of those who are welcome to see their child and indicate whether the visitor may visit without the parents’ being present. This list is maintained on the nursing unit and at the public safety desk in Comer Children's lobby. A total of four (4) color-coded visitor passes are available from the Comer Children’s public safety officer. Visitors MUST present a photo ID (This can be a driver’s license; Illinois or State ID card, employment or school ID with photo.) The public safety officer will retain the ID and issue a visitor pass. The ID will be returned upon return of the visitor pass to the public safety officer. Siblings and friends of the patient who are under the age of 18 may visit only if accompanied by an adult. They do not have to surrender a photo ID.
  • Visiting hours are from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Code Number Program & Obtaining Patient Information

  • Upon admission, parents will be given a four-digit code number that will be used to identify them as their child's primary caregivers.
  • Parents who call over the phone for health updates from any hospital staff member will be asked to first provide the four-digit code number.
  • The same four-digit code number remains valid with each hospitalization, so parents are cautioned about giving this code out too freely.

For parents who want detailed medical information about their child, there are three ways to obtain it:

  • Nurse: Your child's nurse is available to give updates about your child's medical condition.
  • Morning Rounds: If you would like to be present when the physicians come to your child's room, ask your child's nurse to give you an approximate time when rounds will occur. Not all rounding occurs inside your child's room.
  • Physician: The physician caring for your child will make every effort to arrange a time to speak with you in person or by phone.
